Now, is obvious that people are beginning to wake-up and face reality. Nigeria is not a democratic country, some even say that the country is an Islamic country and the administration of Buhari and APC proves them right.

Critics of the Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari believe his government is more brutal than the military dictatorship he presided over in the 1980s.

The criticism follows the continued detention, in defiance of court orders, of the former national security adviser, a pro-Biafra advocate and the most senior Muslim figure in the country.

Sambo Dasuki, Nnamdi Kanu and head of Islamic Movement of Nigeria Ibrahim el Zakzaky are detained for alleged corruption, treason and agitating for the overthrow of government correspondingly.

Courts have granted them bail but they remain in detention.

“Unfortunately, the Buhari administration does not seem to appreciate that we are operating a democratic dispensation, otherwise, once a court has ordered that somebody be released on bail as in the case of Col.

Sambo Dasuki and Nnamdi Kanu, the government cannot dance around it,” says public affairs analyst, Haruna Elbinawi.

For Dasuki, he says the case was worse because three courts had admitted him to bail.

In addition, the Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas) Court had even slammed damages of N50 million against the government for disobeying the orders of the court in violation of the right of personal liberty under the African Charter of Human Rights.

Elbinawi says the case of sheikh Ibrahim el Zakzaky and his wife was “the worst case of human right violation” with respect to the right of personal liberty since the colonial regime.

“This is the first time that a man and his wife are detained illegally for over a year, and in spite of a court order that they be released and be paid damages.”

“It is the height of impunity that has ever been committed by a democratic government in this country,” Elbinawi stated.

He says under Buhari’s dictatorship in the 1980s, nobody was detained without an order, pursuant to a decree.

He says there could be no justification for detaining any Nigerian without a court order.

“It is worse when a court has ordered the release of a person, and the government still holds and keeps such a person.”

Buhari has previously been quoted as saying the suspects could not be released as they faced “serious” charges.

Buhari came to power through a coup in 1983 and ruled until 1985.

In 2015, he was democratically elected ahead of incumbent Goodluck Jonathan.
