If people who committed election crime in this country are charged, and jailed when found guilty, then people will take election in Nigeria serious. But the reverse is the case, those who have Oga-At-The-Top will always go free irrespective of the crime they commit.
The Katsina State police command, on Monday, arraigned a chieftain of Peoples Democratic Party in the state, Umaru Tata, before a Katsina senior magistrate court on a two-count of public nuisance, under section 199 of criminal code.
The charges were in connection with Saturday’s Federal House of Representatives by-election for Mashi/Dutsi Federal Constituency of the state.
Tata was arrested by the police at Dutsi on the eve of the by-election, May 19, for what the state police commissioner, Alhaji Umar Abdullahi told journalists, acts capable of breaching public peace during the election.
According to the police commissioner, Tata was picked up after he failed to heed police advice to stop distributing grains to women in the town and for holding durbar on the eve of the election.
The police First Information Report read in court by Deputy Superintendent of police, Ibrahim Salisu, said that Tata contravened section 199 of the criminal code.
Tata’s lead counsel, Uyi Igunman, said police charged Tata for distributing grains and for riding on a horse on the eve of the by-election.
“We argued for his bail and we got it,’’ the lead counsel told journalists shortly after Senior Magistrate Nuradeen Ladan had granted Tata bail in the sum of N500,000.00 and two sureties.
Ladan adjourned the case to 4th, July 2017.
