US And British Army In Nigeria To Military Support Operations - General Leo Irabor

It is a shame that Nigerian Army is still looking for assistance in the area of military operations after about 60 years independence.

The United States Army as well as their British counterparts operating in the northeast region of Nigeria were said to be around to support and give necessary advice to Nigerian soldiers fighting Boko Haram insurgency and not to participate in combat operations.

The outgoing Theatre Commander, Operation Lafiya Dole, Major General Leo Irabor, who is taking over the command at the Multinational Joint Task Force in Njanmena, Chad disclosed this on Tuesday in a chat with the media at the Theatre Command office, while handing over the command to the new Commander, Major General Ibrahim Attahiru.

General Irabor said, there were about eight American Soldiers with the command as well as British Army, who are to help towards returning peace to the northeast.

Speaking on the number of Boko Haram investigated so far by the military, he said, the Theatre Command has concluded investigation of about 1,400 suspected Boko Haram fighters, who accepted being part of the men of the dreaded sect in the North East.

He said, what they are doing now is to ensure de-radicalization of the militants.

Speaking on the complaint that, soldiers are fighting Boko Haram with obsolete weapons,General Irabor said, before soldiers were running away from Boko Haram fighters, but now the situation has changed because it is the Boko Haram that are now running away from the soldiers, adding that, this is as a result of having superior weapons unlike the complaints in other quarters.

Speaking on the welfare of soldiers, General Irabor said, his main duty in Maiduguri and the North East is to deal with Boko Haram issues, adding that, issues of welfare is handled by another department, but would be glad if it is reviewed in the operation to the motivation of the soldiers.
